Naomi W.

Naomi W.Where do you work and what is your role in the company?

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way? If you are teleworking, how long would your commute have been if you were commuting to the office?

10 miles total and it takes me 25 mins each way.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

I bike to work. I decided to commute on my bike because I appreciate being able to get exercise while I commute. Active transportation is such a privilege.

What do you enjoy about your commute (or teleworking)?

The views of the city and mountains are always incredible, I like being outdoors and getting fresh air. I work off a lot to daily stress by getting 30-40 mins of exercise on my commute. My bike ride to and from work is "me time' where I can unplug for the digital world.

Do you have any interesting stories from your commute?

I enjoy being able to get to say "good morning" to lots of children on their way to school. I pass four schools on my route to work.

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

I save on gas and wear on my car. I also save on potential medical expenses by staying healthy!

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

Bike racks (we could use more), flexible work hours, and showers!

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

More covered bike racks or storage.

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

It's a wonderful way to start and end your day, by riding a bike! Building your daily exercise into your commute is a great way to stay healthy. Riding a bike to work allows you to explore areas that you wouldn't in a car because you're not always riding on the main arterials. I take the side streets when I ride and really feel like I've gotten to know my community better.
