Science and Math Institute - Tacoma Public Schools (SAMI) - High School Teacher - Computer Science, Math, Biking

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

5-7 miles depending on kid pick-ups.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

I either commute on a cargo-bike, or traditional bike depending on if I get to do kid pick-up form school.

What do you enjoy about your commute?

I enjoy getting out into nature and interacting with my community. When biking it is common to get a chance to chat with a neighbor or chat with a friend commuting the same direction. I also enjoy being active.

Do you have any positive, interesting stories from your commute?

In the last year I have had a chance to launch a biking class, in partnership with 2nd Cycle, at my school. While not directly part of my commute, biking has now become part of my work day. We have gotten to teach students about safe road cycling, route selection, basic bike repair and more. It has been fun to see the excitement this has brought students and the freedom of movement they have gained.

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

I'm not sure, but seeing gas prices I'm sure I'm saving money.

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

A couple years ago SAMI and Pt. Defiance allowed us to install a high quality bike rack near my primary part of campus. Near other parts of the SAMI campus we have a variety of high quality racks, and even one under cover rack. Pt. Defiance is in the middle of building out an amazing bike/ped path that will drastically upgrade my commute.

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

SAMI (and Tacoma Public Schools) has done a great job offering students ORCA passes (even before the Climate Commitment Act). Could this be extended to staff members? (Ride Together Pierce is looking into this!)

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

Get out and enjoy the nice spring weather! Be active and help reduce pollution and traffic.
