bike parking (1)Where do you work and what is your role in the company?

Mason Middle School, Special Education Teacher

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

2 miles each way, 10-15 minutes each way.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

I ride a bicycle. I chose cycling because it is fast and inexpensive. I also love repairing old bicycles.

What do you enjoy about your commute (or teleworking)?

The thing I enjoy about my commute is being more connected to what is happening in the community. I see people, animals, and experience the weather every day.

Do you have any interesting stories from your commute?

I've ridden this entire school year. During the rides I've been able to enjoy the seasons changing.

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

I definitely save money over having a car! It would be at least $300 to drive to work. Cycling has cost less than $50/month if I spread out the repair costs and gear purchases over the year.

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

My bike is welcome behind my desk! Work has been great! Many students ride their bikes to school. I think it's a great model of an alternative for the students.

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

If they provided a floor pump for my classroom that would help ;) Really, nothing needed.

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

If you want to come to work awake and energized, reduce stress and get exercise, get on a bike! It's not as expensive as it looks. Old bikes are cheap and easy to fix. It's an adventure too!
