Nigel T.

Nigel star commuter on bikeWhere do you work and what is your role in the company?

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

6 miles.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

Bicycle. Opportunity for exercise, reduced cost and impact to the environment. Achieving better separation between work and home.

What do you enjoy about your commute (or teleworking)?

Opportunity for exercise, fresh air and I do some of my best thinking while cycling to and from work.

Do you have any interesting stories from your commute?

I've been cycling to work daily for 20 years. I'm consistently impressed by how considerate the vast majority of other road users are. With the right gear- waterproofs, studded snow tires in winter, etc., commuting in all weathers is actually fun.

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

Yes, [bicycling] has saved me a lot and allowed us to have less vehicles in the family.

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

Bike rack. Office or changing room.

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

Keep sharing examples, highlighting ways to make it work. Provide bike maintenance on site periodically.

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

Cycling to work is good for your health, pocket and the environment. It's also great for your mental health- separating work from home and giving you time for thinking in the fresh air. Try it- you'll thank yourself later.
