Tacoma Pierce County Health Department.

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

My commute is 35 minutes to the office and 35 minutes back home.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

I telework part of the time.

What do you enjoy about your commute?

When I telework, I enjoy spending the time I would have been in traffic with my family. I use that time to walk to the playground with my two sons after work.

Do you have any positive, interesting stories from your commute?

When I telework I make it a point to get fresh air after work. My family and I love playing at the playground after work or walking around the neighborhood to look at holiday lights around the neighborhood.

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

I save gas money and car maintenance by teleworking. I probably save $100 a month by teleworking part time.

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

[Ride Together Pierce] gives incentives for sustainable trips by rewarding one lucky sustainable traveler with $150 each month.

Note from Ride Together Pierce: The Health Department has a telework policy that allows employees to work from home 3-4 days a week. They also have bike racks, ORCA cards and flexible scheduling for staff to work 4x10 schedules.

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

I suggest they continue to promote sustainable commutes including telework to help our environment.

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

Sustainable trips help our community and our environment. It is also a great way to create and sustain friendships.
